On Tuesday morning, May 8, 2018, President Joko Widodo received approximately 80 representatives of trucking logistics drivers at the Istana Negara, Jakarta. During the meeting, there were several complaints submitted to the President. Some of the main complaints are the large number of illegal fees and thuggery actions they have to face while doing their work.

The illegal fee in question is the additional cost charged by the transportation service personnels when the truckloads exceed capacity. They feel there is no clear rule about the maximum limit of cargo that can be transported. The President asked Minister of Transportation Budi Karya who also attended the meeting to immediately follow up the complaints submitted by truck drivers. After the meeting, the Minister of Transportation is ready to evaluate and improve the execution of existing regulations.

Another problem that truck drivers face is the threat of thuggery at some points along their transportation path. The most vulnerable paths according to them are along the Sumatera highway from Aceh to Lampung. Another route is the segment between Samarinda-Balikpapan and several points in the area of Jakarta and surrounding areas. Entering these areas, they are required to pay some money so that their trucks would not be disturbed. The President instructed the Indonesian Police Deputy Chief  Komjen Syafruddin who was present at the meeting to crack down on the perpetrators of the thuggery.
